BIOGRAPHY

Marilyn Hannah Lau is a Malaysian-Chinese dance artist and photographer currently based in Melbourne (Naarm), Australia. She has been dancing since the age of 6 and has trained in classical ballet, modern theatre, contemporary, jazz and street dance. In 2021, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). She has worked with professional choreographers Anna Smith, Phillip Adams, Alice Dixon, Caroline Meaden, Amrita Hepi and Daniel Riley. She has also choreographed and performed for church productions and conferences in both Malaysia and Australia.

Besides her passion for dance, she also enjoys taking photos. She particularly enjoys photographing live events as she loves capturing moments that would otherwise be there one moment and gone the next. Her love for photography as well as dance has also sparked her interest in interdisciplinary collaboration between dance and other disciplines such as photography, light, design and music. Her faith is an important aspect of her life and she actively volunteers in church through dance and photography.

In her current practice, Marilyn is interested in pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration between dance and other disciplines. As a dancer who holds experience in multiple creative fields such as photography, music and design, she is curious in exploring concepts and techniques from other disciplines and how they can be applied to work alongside dance in creating a greater whole. She believes that true collaboration leaves its collaborators with a deeper level of understanding between each others' practices.

She also loves the physicality of dance and is constantly challenging the body to find new pathways and textures in movement. As a choreographer, she enjoys experimenting with spatial patterning and the organisation of people and things in space. Additionally, she is passionate about building the arts industry and imparting into the next generation. She believes that dance is a method of carrying freedom and joy that is capable of opening people up to new possibilities and is something to be shared with the greater community. In all that she does, she believes in giving her best and in constantly learning through her experiences and endeavors no matter the outcome.
